  • Consultation on Tavistock/Torrington Place Cycle Route

    For the last year Torrington Place and Tavistock Place have had segregated cycle tracks on both sides of the street. This consultation is about making the current trial arrangement permanent. The current lightly segregated tracks would mostly become stepped tracks and there would be other improvements to junctions as well as increased space for pedestrians. There is a lot of local support but also significant opposition, mostly from residents of Judd and other streets where motor traffic volumes have increased. We think this can be corrected by the (separate) proposed changes to Judd Street and at Brunswick Square.

    It's important that all cyclists and others in favour respond using the website below. Otherwise we are in danger of losing this flagship facility. You don't have to live in Camden but you do need to provide an address and postcode.

  • Consultation on St Mark’s Square Proposed Pedestrian and Cycling Improvements

    This consultation offers very-long-campaigned for two-way cycling in St Marks Square to complete the 6-year old scheme in Princess Road.

    Camden proposes to take out one of the three motor traffic lanes and replace it with a northbound contraflow cycle lane. The parking will be moved from the west side of the road and replaced as a floating parking bay outside the contraflow cycle lane – with a buffer to separate the cars from the cycle lane.

    They also propose a right turn pocket on Prince Albert Road to facilitate right turns into the contraflow cycle lane.

    For pedestrians, Camden proposes an extra green-man crossing so that there will be one on each of the three arms.

    TfL propose changes on A400 Hampstead Road between Harrington Square and Drummond Street "to improve bus journey time reliability and pedestrian safety in the area".

    Where is the promised scheme for safe cycling?

    In February, TfL officer Michael Collella circulated by email a draft scheme for 'bus and cycle improvements' on Hampstead Road asking for our feedback. These include segregated cycle tracks on both side of the road:

    between Mornington Crescent and Varndell Street on the west side

    and between Lidlington Place and a point north of Cardington Street where it merged into a bus lane on the east side.

    This had been preceded by meetings with TfL officer Timothy MacKay in Feb 2015 and April 2014 where similar schemes were proposed.

    What does the current scheme propose ?

    This amounts mainly to the removal of all opportunities for loading and parking on the southbound bus lane. i.e. bus improvement.

    They also propose:

    ASLs on all approaches to the junction with Drummond Street. However they say: “ this is to ensure that turning vehicles do not come into conflict with vehicles stopped at the junction”… nothing about benefit to cyclists!

    Pedestrian count down signals on all four arms of the junction with Drummond Street.

  • Earlham Street West – proposed public realm improvements

    Earlham Street runs one way westbound between Seven Dials and Shaftesbury Avenue.

    In 2014, Earlham Street was closed to motor vehicles at the junction with Shaftesbury Avenue.

    The stated objective include the following:

    - create a safer and more attractive connection for pedestrians and cyclists to neighbouring areas, especially Soho and St Giles

    The proposed changes include the following:

    - between Shaftesbury Avenue and Tower Street, the entire road width at footway level with dropped kerbs to allow a cycle connection to Shaftesbury. They don’t say whether the existing bollards will remain in place.

    - between Tower Street and Seven Dials, narrow the road from 6.5 to 3m, move parking to other side of Seven Dials, widen footways.
    - market stalls on south side of street with loading before and after trading times

    Camden Council proposes measures to reduce eastbound rat running (up to 450 motor vehicles per hour in the morning rush hour) in Briardale Gardens and Ferncroft Avenue.

    The proposal is a No Entry except for cyclists into Briardale Gardens from Finchley Road. Briardale Gardens itself will remain two way.

  • Proposed changes to Miller Street NW1

    Camden are consulting with residents of, and neighbouring residents to, The Three Fields Estate on Arlington Road.

    Part of their proposal is to remove the awkward dog-leg on Miller Street. Hurray.

    I know Miller Street is a popular east-west desire line and (sort of) connects up with Pratt Street.

    The proposal doesn't mention cycles. Boo. I'd hate to see it being pedestrians only. Although it's difficult to tell what is meant by the pink colouring on the proposed plan, it does look like their will be vehicular access in this area. Let's hope the existing filtered permeability will be maintained.

  • North-South Cycle Superhighway (extension to Kings Cross)

    The North-South Cycle Superhighway is already under construction between Stonecutter Street and Elephant & Castle.

    TfL, together with Camden and Islington Councils, is now consulting on proposals to extend it north up to King’s Cross.

    The proposal is that it should continue north on Farringdon Road to Greville Street where northbound cyclists would turn onto a quiet back-street route to King’s Cross.

    Southbound cyclists from King’s Cross would turn off the back-street route onto Farringdon Road at Ray Street via a new signalised junction and continue south on a stepped cycle track.

  • Brunswick Square Walking and Cycling Improvements

    Camden says: "To be delivered as part of the Central London Cycle Grid, the key aspect of this scheme proposes a road closure that would restrict access for motor vehicles between Lansdowne Terrace and Brunswick Square at the junction with Bernard Street. This closure allows us to create a large pedestrian-only area, provide a new cycle track, simplify the road layout and rejuvenate the area around the square."

    This joint TfL/Camden consultation takes the North – South Cycle Superhighway across Euston Road and continuing with a section of central London grid on Midland Road to join the existing southern extension of the Royal College Street route.

    It includes:
    - Cycle-only green signal to allow cyclists to cross Euston Road separately from motor traffic
    - Two-stage right turn areas to allow cyclists to access Judd Street and Midland Road without crossing lanes of moving traffic

    and two options for Judd Street:
    Option 1 – Full closure of Judd Street at Euston Road / Midland Road junction to allow a dedicated cycle crossing across Euston Road
    Option 2 – Judd Street entry only for motorists from Midland Road, with segregated northbound contraflow cycle track

  • Junction Road - Cycle Improvement Scheme

    Dear Resident/Trader,

    Islington Council have proposals to make improvements for cyclists on Junction Road.

    The main improvements for cyclists are mandatory northbound and southbound cycle lanes between Tufnell Park Road and Bredgar Road.

    Traffic islands near the junction of Dartmouth Park Hill and Cathcart Hill will be removed to create extra carriageway space for the cycle lanes. The existing bus stops on Junction Road will be unchanged.

    Some existing parking bays will need to be relocated or removed to accommodate the new cycle lanes. There will be a net loss of 8 parking bays on Junction Road. However the council will further investigate ways to mitigate parking loss during detailed design.

    Parking bays No. 81 - 89 Junction Road and No. 84 Junction Road and No. 1 Linden Walk will be removed.

    There will be some parking bays which are partially on footway and partially on the carriageway which are located:

    • outside No. 132D – 140D Junction Road.
    • outside No. 114 - 122 Junction Road.
    • outside No. 127 – 145 Junction Road.
    • outside No. 104 – 112 Junction Road.
    • outside No. 151 - 165 Junction Road.

    The proposals include parking bays being relocated on to the footway outside Silver Court, Junction Road with an increase of one parking space and outside Ash Court, Junction Rd with an increase of one parking space.

    Some existing parking bays will need to be relocated or removed to accommodate the new cycle lanes. There will be a net loss of 8 parking bays on Junction Road. Three new residents parking bays will be created on Wyndham Crescent to mitigate against the loss of parking spaces on Junction Road.

    To increase the number of short-term parking bays there are proposals to convert existing resident parking bays to shared-use (residents and pay and display) bays in Brookside Road. The council is proposing to add three additional resident parking bays on Wyndham Crescent, two near the junction of Dartmouth Park Hill and the third near Bishops Close. (See Figure 2).

    Figure 1 below is a plan showing the proposals on Junction Road.

  • Changes to the King's Cross gyratory

    TfL are consulting on a major scheme aimed at improving the roads in the Kings Cross area. The consultation proposes the conversion of several key roads from one-way to two-way working (York Way, Pentonville Road, Gray's Inn Road and Caledonian Road). New cycle facilities proposed include cycle contraflow lanes on Wharfedale Road, King's Cross Road, Penton Rise and Acton Street. New signalised crossings for cycles are suggested at Lorenzo Street and Pentonville Road and Penton Rise and Pentonville Road.

    There is no discussion of the engineering details. Those are promised for early 2017 following the results of this consultation.

    An important issue for cycle campaigners will be the feasibility of achieving protected space on the main alignments through the area.

    The preamble describes a "Vision" for Grays Inn Road as part of a larger scheme for the Farringdon Area:

    - improved streets for walking & cycling
    - clearer and easier access to move through the area on foot, cycle or public transport
    - safe, attractive and less cluttered streets
    - a better place to live, work and do business.

    The current set of proposals are related to bus reliability and pedestrian safety. They include the following:

    - Raised zebra crossings at five sites with a standard layout that involves build outs to leave a 9m wide crossing. (some of these replace informal crossings with islands, some are new).

    This consultation proposes the construction of an important two-way east-west cycle route across Camden Town.

    It will run from St Pancras Way along Pratt Street, across Royal College Street to Camden High Street, where a two-way cycle crossing will be provided.

    It will then run two-way along Delancey Street as far as Mornington Terrace.

    A later consultation on the continuation of this route to Regents Park is promised.

    This scheme proposes to restore two way working in Tottenham Court Road (TCR) and in the Gower Street alignment which includes Bloomsbury Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. All the bus routes will be on TCR.

    The consultation is on Camden's website at:

    In TCR, Camden proposes a "bus and cycle street" from 8 am to 7pm (Monday to Saturday) with local access for cars, taxis and loading on short sections of Tottenham Court Road via side roads.

    TCR will have a pair of 4.5m wide carriageways to be shared by cycles and buses (90 buses per hour in each direction) and by the additional local traffic.

    In the Gower Street alignment, Camden proposes two-way access for private motor vehicles (no buses) and that these roads will have a pair of 4.5m wide carriageways, each including a lightly segregated 1.5m wide cycle track.

    Other measures proposed:
    - in both TCR and the Gower Street alignment Camden proposes raised sections of road to reduce motor speeds
    - two-way cycling in all the side streets (except for Maple Street, University Street and Howland Street)
    - new public spaces including a new park on Alfred Place and a ladder of calm side streets.

    N-S Cycle Superhighway consultation
    ------------------------------------------------------

    TfL proposed that the N-S Cycle Superhighway should stop at Greville Street but LCC's response to the consultation stated that the route should continue on Farringdon Road to at least the junction with Calthorpe and Margery Street (under discussion here).

    After the consultation TfL replied that they would explore options north of Stonecutter Street(which is actually south of Greville Street!). The N-S Cycle Superhighway may be completed by Spring 2016 but we have no date for it being extended any further north.

    - the early release signals are only as effective as a longer ASl box, not protecting cycles that arrive during the green stage.

    Camden Cyclists we propose to send a response to this consultation on behalf of our members. This will focus only on the part within Camden (the section between Charterhouse Street and Euston Road - as detailed on the map attached). But note that the alignment of the route north of Greville Street is not agreed between Camden and TfL and is not formally considered a part of the consultation.

    So it makes sense to have two discussion threads for the sections in Camden south and north of Greville Street.

  • Bartholomew Road Area Proposals consultation

    In this consultation, Camden proposes some turn restrictions with a view to eliminating rat running through the residential streets in an area north bounded by Leighton Road, Torriano Avenue, Camden Road, Rochester Road and Kentish Town Road.

    The consultation leaflet includes a map showing the main rat runs identified from traffic surveys in 2013 (see image). These included the following:

    A: southbound along Bartholomew Road and out via Patshull Road or Sandall Road (AM peak).

    B: northbound on Bartholomew Road and out at Sandall Road or Leighton Road (PM peak).

    The proposals include the following:

    Junction of Leighton Road and Bartholomew Road

    - "No Right Turn (Except Cyclists) " from Leighton Road into Bartholomew Road

    - "No Left Turn (Except Cyclists)" from Bartholomew Road into Leighton Road

    The AM counts show 316 motors SB between 8 and 9 am (with 152 NB). This is far above LCC's criterion of less than 200 per hour for safe and comfortable sharing of the road by cycles and motors. In the AM peak, 241 motors turned right from Leighton Road into Bartholomew Road - so the "No Right Turn" from Leighton Road into Bartholomew Road is potentially very effective in reducing rat runs.

    The PM peak figures show 159 motors making the left turn from Bartholomew Road into Leighton Road.

    Junction of Sandall Road and Camden Road
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    - "No right turn (Except Cyclists" from Camden Road into Sandall Road.

    - " No right turn (Except Cyclists)" from Sandall Road into Camden Road.

    - Extend the central traffic island on Camden Road at the junction with Sandall Road to stop the above manoeuvres. There will be a gap in the island to allow cyclists to make these turns.

    The Sandall Road changes will make the junction with Camden Road a lot safer for pedestrians and people who cycle and will also reduce rat running on lines B1 and C.

    Kentish Town Road/ Patshull Road
    ---------------------------------------------------

    - Convert to two way traffic on Patshull Road between Kentish Town Road and Bartholomew Villas. Widen the carriageway at Patshull Road junction with Kentish Town Road to accommodate two way.

    - Relocate the ‘No Entry’ signs at Patshull Road/ Kentish Town Road junction to Patshull Road at the junction with Bartholomew Villas.

    The change is to enable traders e.g. Earth to use a storage place accessible via a little access road running behind the shop. That's why the proposal is to move the No Entry.

    But I think it would be better to place the No Entry just east of the little access road to avoid rat-running via Bartholomew Villas.

    The main improvement for cycling is the facilitation of an eastbound route between Goods Way and Wharfdale Road. Unfortunately, due to Wharfdale Road being one way, this route currently doesn't work westbound.

    Camden Council's proposals include the following:

    - Permit cyclists to turn right out of Goods Way into York Way

    - ASLs on all three arms of the junction

    - Northbound approach on York Way towards Goods Way reduced to single motor lane, making room for a cycle lane

    - Signalised green man crossings on all three arms of the junction (only one at present)
