  • Barnet Draft Long Term Transport Strategy 2020-2041 Consultation

Created by JonC // 1 thread

Update: Strategy adopted by Environment Committee on 09/09/2020

"Barnet’s population is growing and by 2030 it will have grown to almost 450,000 people, with a significant increase in the older population. We want to ensure that transport in the borough can support this growth and provides a reliable, safe and convenient transport network which supports improvements to air quality and the health of all of our residents."

"There is also limited road space in the borough and with the projected population growth, congestion can only be addressed by reducing our reliance on the car and encouraging more sustainable and active ways to travel such as walking, cycling and public transport."

"Our proposed Long Term Transport Strategy sets a direction for change to offer greater choices for travel, encourage more active lifestyles which will increase the health and well-being of Barnet’s residents and improve air quality. The strategy also sets out a number of proposed schemes for each type of travel along with activities to help change behaviour and encourage positive changes to the way we currently travel."

    "

    Our vision

The strategy includes the following vision statement relating to our long term vision for transport in the borough:

By 2041, Barnet will have an efficient, convenient and reliable transport network, which enables safe, healthy and inclusive travel, protects the natural environment and supports the borough’s growth.

The network will have transformed the way people and goods travel, providing strong orbital and radial links which gives everyone a choice of transport modes to complete their journey regardless of age, ability or income.

This vision informs our proposals for the future of transport in the borough, and sets out a roadmap for achieving our vision which also complements other council policies such as the Growth Strategy(External link), the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy(External link), and the draft Local Plan(External link)."

  • A41 Finchley Road - Swiss Cottage to Childs Hill

Created by JonC // 0 threads

TfL propose bus and walking improvements along Finchley Road between Hillgrove Road (Swiss Cottage) and Hendon Way (Childs Hill),

No direct references to improving cycling along this route. Mostly in Camden.

Only the Hendon Way junction is in Barnet. See Barnet Cyclists issue A41-A598 Burgess Hill for discussion of that junction.

  • Roadworks: Royal College Street

Created by John Chamberlain // 1 thread

From 20th November until 18th December contractors Sf Stefan will be laying broadband fibre on Royal College Street. This will affect the northbound with-flow cycle lane. As far as possible, a segregated cycle lane will be maintained by closing parking bays and using barriers to make a cycle lane in the main carriageway but there may be a few locations where cyclists temporarily have to use the main carrigeway.

  • Roadworks: Gower Street

Created by John Chamberlain // 1 thread

From Monday 25th November to Monday 2nd December Gower Street will be closed from Grafton Way to between Torrington Place and Chenies Street for resurfacing. There will be no access for motor vehicles nor cyclists and both University Street and Torrington Place will be closed with diversions in operation. This will obvously have a major impact on the E-W cycle route on Tavistock Place/Torrington Place. Details of diversion routes are shown in the attached thread.

Then from December 2nd until Monday 9th the works move south and Gower Street will be closed from north of Chenies Street to mid-way down Bedford Square. The E-W cycle route on Tavistock Place/Torrington Place will re-open. This should have less impact but there will still be local diversions.

  • Roadworks: Eversholt Street

Created by John Chamberlain // 1 thread

From 25th November to 23rd December one lane of Eversholt Street will be closed between Phoenix Road and Drummond Crescent for work on a 16" water main. Traffic will be two-way but controlled by signals and therefore is likely to be even more congested than usual. In addition, Phoenix Road will be closed so cyclists will need to use Polygon Road to access Somers Town and Ossulston Street.

    Update 27/11/19 - now deferred till 2020

  • Public Realm & Road Safety Improvements on Cartwright Gardens

Created by Jean Dollimore // 1 thread

Cartwright Gardens is the middle section of the road that runs south from Euston Road;  the top section being called Mabledon Place and the bottom section  Marchmont Street.

It is well known to people who cycle (or used to do so before Midland Road opened) into Bloomsbury via the Somerstown route and cross Euston Road from Ossulston Street.

For as long as I remember, there has been no footway on the side adjacent to the green space on the west side. And when you cycle up there, you often pass forlorn pedestrians keeping close to the fence.

  • Camden Park Road, St. Augustine’s Road and Cliff Villas walking and cycling impr

Created by Jean Dollimore // 1 thread

This consultation proposes a cycling and walking link between St  Augustine’s Road and Cliff Villas, the location of Brecknock Primary School.

They mention connection to the proposed cycle route between Camden and Tottenham Hale that Transport for London will be consulting on in 2020 which is a very valid point even if we’re not sure of its alignment.

  • Safe speeds for central London – introducing 20mph speed limits

    Anon // 1 thread

    Overview

We want your views on our proposals to make the streets we manage in central London 20mph by 2020 and the associated measures.

Last year, in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), we published the Vision Zero Action Plan. The Action Plan sets out our ambition to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s transport network by 2041.

It details our plans to reduce road danger, including proposals to implement a 20mph speed limit on the roads we operate and manage in central London.

We’ve been working to determine the most effective way of implementing the new speed limits and are now ready to share our plans with you.

We’ve provided more information about our proposals on this page and would like your feedback before we progress this important safety programme.
